The Reial Monastir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes is a gorgeous Gothic monastery in Barcelona. The convent was founded by Queen Elisenda de Montcada. It dates from the early 14th century and until 1983 it was inhabited by the nuns of the Order of Saint Clare.
The highlight of the monastery is its three storey cloister which is considered the world’s largest Gothic cloister. Each side of the square structure is 40 meters long and counts numerous columns (26 per side and storey). Remarkably the monastery was built within just one year.
The convent has a big courtyard with a herb garden, trees, medieval stone benches, and fountains.
In 1991 the monastery was declared a national monument and it is now a museum.
The place is somewhat far from the city center but it is well worth a visit. Admission is free the first Sunday of every month and every other Sunday after 3 pm.
